Monday afternoon we had well check visits for both girls...Kensley at 2.5 years old and Avery at 12 months. We were fortunate to have them scheduled as both girls came down with some kind of stomach virus on Sunday (yeah Happy Father's Day, right?). The past week we all had a sinus/head cold and then last weekend it turned south for the girls (literally). Both of them woke up with terrible diarrhea on Sunday morning and each of them vomited once. Kens perked up a little bit on Monday, but Avery slept the majority of the day and was really lethargic when she was awake.
So we were glad that we were already scheduled to go to the doctor. Neither girl had a fever so the doctor seemed to think it was viral and would have to run it's course. Both girls finally seem back to normal and have their appetites back.
All in all, the appointments went pretty well. It always feels really chaotic in the moment as I am balancing both girls, while one nurse is weighing and measuring them (as Avery is screaming) and the other is asking me questions about their development, etc. Kensley did wonderful and was so good. She talked to the nurses and doctor and did everything they asked. It's like all of a sudden she seemed so grown up to me! They said she looked perfect and she's right on track!
One funny thing was they asked if she knew the difference between boys and girls (they said it's really more of a 3 year old thing, but still something they ask). I was kind of thrown off and didn't really know the answer. We're so focused on colors, shapes, letters, names, etc. that I never really thought about obvious things. When I said I didn't know, the nurse gave her a brief quiz and she got 3 of 4 right (she said mommy was a boy, really?!). So after hearing that, daddy was sure to work on it with her that night...quizzing her on everyone that she knows. She did pretty well overall.
Avery has hit the stranger anxiety stage pretty hard. That, coupled with her feeling pretty miserable, made it kind of rough for her. The doctor examined her on my lap as Avery was shoveling down cheerios (which we were all thrilled about since she had barely eaten the past 24 hours). The doctor said she looked great despite being sick, but she wants us to try to beef up her calories a little more. She is still pretty tiny (moved down to 4% in weight), but part of that could be attributed to the recent diarrhea. It's just so crazy to me because Avery eats so much (except when she's sick of course)! They want us to try to give her more fatty type foods (add butter, cheese, oil, etc.).
Avery's iron was a little low as well, so we need to add a daily vitamin to her diet. She didn't get her shots this week since she was so miserable so we're scheduled to go back next Wednesday for a shot only appointment. In addition to the sickness, the doctor said that Avery is also getting four of her top teeth all at the same time! Poor girl is getting hit hard!
I addressed the fact that Avery is refusing whole milk (and actually breast milk out of a sippy). So they gave us lots of suggestions to try (even chocolate or strawberry milk) and in the end they didn't really seem all that concerned. They said if she drinks milk great, if not then make sure she gets dairy in other forms and also drinks lots of water. So that was good in that it took some pressure off of me. I was concerned about when to wean her as I wasn't sure how she was going to get milk down. When she starts feeling better, we'll try some different things.
Here are the girls' stats.
